The National Association of Hispanic Journalists' (NAHJ) Parity Project serves as a model for the entire English-language media industry when it comes to: 1) Improving diversity among news staff, especially when it comes to Latinos and other journalists of color. 2) Improving news coverage of, and interaction with, diverse community leaders. NAHJ'S PARITY PROJECT IN COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT U.S.: NAHJ's Parity Project is in place at 25 news organizations throughout the United States, including newspapers, TV stations and National Public Radio in states such as: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Texas, Utah and Virginia. LACK OF PARITY FOR LATINOS IN U.S. ENGLISH-LANGUAGE NEWS ORGANIZATIONS: Latinos are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Latinos comprise 15% of the overall U.S. population. Yet, according to the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE - link: http://www.asne.org/index.cfm?id=1138), Latinos make up only 4.46 % of the work force of daily English-language newspapers, and that includes journalists who work on the Web sites of newspapers. The Radio-Television News Directors Association (link: http://www.rtnda.org/media/pdfs/communicator/2007/julaug/20-25_Survey_Communicator.pdf) Latinos make up only 6.2% of the workforce in local English-language TV newsrooms, not including the news staffs of the major television networks. When it comes to African American, Asian Pacific American and Native American journalists, the numbers and disparity between the audience and journalists who make up the news staffs of these media organizations are very similar to those of Latinos. INFLUENCE OF LATINO AMERICANS IN THE U.S.: As evidenced by the outcome of the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election, Americans who are people of color make up a large and dramatically growing percentage of the U.S. population. When it comes to Latinos who are U.S. citizens, the Census Bureau estimates that 30% of the entire United States population will consider themselves Latino/Hispanic by the year 2050. Latinos currently comprise about 58% of Corpus Christi's population. Corpus Christi, Texas is also where the League of United Latin American Citizens (link: http://www.lulac.org) and the American GI Forum (link: http://www.americangiforum.org), whcih supports Latino U.S. military veterans, where founded. It is also the hometown of the late Tejana singer Selena Quintanilla.
Latinos currently comprise about 9% of Boulder's population.
