smokey eyes of grey float through my mind

with white temples set in jet black hair

amidst a stone chisled face, hard to believe

it could ever possess a fatherly laughter.

although at times i felt you were the worst

one in all the world i see only now the

hardening of mind and body you set to make

me into the man i have become.

and for this i will always be truly thankful

If I were to be elected King, I'd make some big changes.(Of course, if I ever really wanted power, I'd have to be elected vice president.)

In Broward County, Fla. (Fort Lauderdale and surrounds), the public schools this year(?) must move or eliminate bus stops. Why?

Because a new state law prohibits a school bus stop from being within 1,000 yards of a pedophile on probation, and the county has 1,100 registered sexual predators. (Which has increased since the printing of this article.)

There's been a minor debate about whether the law meant all sex offenders or just pedophiles. That discussion goes on, but Broward's director of transportation, Ruben Parker, was quoted in the Sun-Sentinel as suggesting, after a chat with appropriate authorities, that the 1,100 figure is low and doesn't even count the pedophiles the state plans to release during the school year.

State Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, wrote the bill to keep school buses away from homes of child molesters.

"We're talking about the bad of the bad here," he stated. "These people should be in jail, but we want to make sure that they don't live near (school) bus stops."

"Should be in jail" are the key words here. But instead of moving 400 bus stops, why don't we move 1,100 perverts? Why should decent people and innocent children be forced to rearrange their lives (and bus stops) to be inclusive of a portion of our population that doesn't deserve to be on the loose?

Meanwhile, a man in Palm Beach County is running for a spot on the school board but says it has nothing to do with the problems he encountered last year, when he fought the board members to have the school's mascot, the Maroon Devil, replaced by something a little more benign.

The candidate contends that the devil is a religious symbol that has no place on the grounds of a public school. But he lost out when the committee of parents, teachers and administrators decided that changing the mascot would be a dumb idea.

And while we are on the topic of Satan and dumb ideas, have you been wondering whatever happened to Lt. Gen. William Boykin, the high-up intelligence officer who appeared in uniform and used official data in some of his religion-oriented speeches to inform his audiances that America was in a battle with Satan "because we're a Christian nation?"

Later on, he professed not to be anti-Islam or any other religion. Sure. The fiasco stirred up a pot full of dissent among Americans who didn't consider his demonstrations appropriate in a democratic nation.

The general is not off the hook yet. Some military types say they are still considering the issues. I thought the whole mess by this time would have been swept under the Persian carpet in some muchety-muck's office. It may yet.
