"Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in
a cosmic religion for the future: it transcends a personal God,
avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural &
spiritual."
"This is my soul and my simple believe. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness and compassion." A question of faith!! One of the
questions which you will ask and which I must try to answer is
this; 'What is the
use of climbing Mount Everest?' and my answer must at once
be, 'It is no use'.
There is
not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever. Oh, we may learn
a little about the behavior of the human body at high altitudes,
and possibly medical men may turn our observation to some account
for the purposes of aviation. But otherwise nothing will come of
it.
We shall
not bring back a single bit of gold or silver, not a gem, nor any
coal or iron. We shall not find a single foot of earth that can be
planted with crops to raise food. It's no use.
So, if you
cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to
the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the
struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward,
then you won't see why we go.
What we
get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all,
the end of life.
"We do not
live to eat and make money!
We eat and
make money to be able to enjoy life and that is what life means and
what life is for!

There is and will be much discussion about how we as a society in general need to learn to "let go" more often. There is a lot to be said for this but just what are we discussing? What are we letting go of?
Do we really have a grasp of anything in the first place?
In college one of my favorite topics in philosophy class was the comparison of humans to computers and what makes us different. I wrote some very interesting papers on the subject and thought i might share a few thoughts: I want to illustrate illustrate a way of understanding the mind, let us compare our body and mind to a computer. In this simile, the body is the hardware and the mind is the software. The mind is defined as a non-physical phenomena which perceives, thinks, recognizes... Have you ever really asked yourself what a problem is? Does a problem make us a victim, seek us out, or make us miserable? If we think of problems in this way are we saying nothing more than - I don't deserve this, why is this happening to me and why can't I get a break? Sorry for starting with all the questions, but I think it's very important that we attempt to look at and identify with the things and thoughts that occur in this great big life. This not only includes... (continue reading) |
