WITCHES and ghosts, jack-o'-lanterns and bonfires, trick or treat. The outward trappings of Halloween are easy to identify. But what lies behind this and similar celebrations? Halloween has also been called All Hallows’ Eve. This "supposedly" Christian name, however, hides origins that are far from hallowed. Halloween’s roots go back to a time long before Christianity—the era when the ancient... (continue reading)
The Bible calls the angels God's "sons." (Job 1:6) Considering their significant role in the Bible, some of us may want to know more about them to understand their place in God's purpose. Not only are more people saying that they believe in angels; an increasing number are claiming to have been touched by them in some way. Evidently, people are interested in angels. But how does the current thinking about angels measure... (continue reading)
Easter Eggs: Since the eating of eggs was formerly forbidden during Lent, “decorated eggs,” claims The Encyclopedia Americana, “could symbolize the end of the penitential season and the beginning of joyful celebration.” However, reference works agree that the egg was a symbol of life and fertility among idolaters. Says the book Celebrations: “Eggs were said to be dyed and eaten at the spring festivals in ancient Egypt, Persia, Greece... (continue reading) The Origin of EASTERPosted
The name Easter, used in many lands, is NOT found in the Bible. The book Medieval Holidays and Festivals tells us that "the holiday is named after the pagan Goddess of the Dawn and of Spring, Eostre.” And who was this goddess? "Eostre it was who, according to the legend, opened the portals of Valhalla to receive Baldur, called the White God, because of his purity and also the Sun God, because his brow supplied light to mankind,” answers The... SPEAK OUT AGAINST THE $450 MILLION IN NYC EDUCATION CUTS KIDS PROTEST PROJECT HANDS ACROSS NYC
There are over 1 million public school children in New York City. Each cut affects each child. Speak up and speak out. Go to this link to send a letter now! http://salsa.democracyinaction .org/o/425/t/24/campaign.jsp?c ampaign_KEY=24655 Call 718-222-1089 ext 0 for more information.
In 2002, state lawmakers gave Mayor Michael Bloomberg control over NYC's public schools and the power to appoint the schools' chancellor. There is no doubt that change was needed. The school system was in disarray, and was failing hundreds of thousands of students annually - particularly African American and Latino students. But the current one-man rule system that replaced the old "Board of Education" has its own problems - our schools have endured three system-wide reorganizations. The instability and chaos has left many parents wondering where to turn to get simple problems resolved. The one-man rule has been used to shut parents out of decisions that directly affect their families and there is no objective reporting on how our schools are doing, or where money is being spent; the Department of Education, headed by Chancellor Klein, essentially grades itself. Few understand what's really going on in our schools. Our schools are still failing hundreds of thousands of students every year. On national tests, the achievement gap hasn't budged. And while graduation rates overall have gone up, for some students such as English Language Learners it has dropped, with only 1 in 10 graduating with a Regents diploma. On June 30th, the mayoral control law will expire. Lawmakers are beginning to explore how the law might be changed to address these problems.AQE has joined together with over 20 other parent, youth and education advocacy groups in calling for changes to mayoral control of NYC schools. Send a message to Governor Paterson, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and your local legislators urging them to support effective checks and balances to the mayor and chancellor's power, transparency, and meaningful public participation. Without these three changes, NYC schools will continue to fail hundreds of thousand of students. Please click the link below and send a letter today demanding our children get the reform they need. http://salsa.democracyinaction .org/o/425/campaign.jsp?campai gn_KEY=27098 Our children deserve better! SAY NO TO PROPERTY TAX CAPS
Click HERE to send a letter to Governor Paterson telling him to stop promoting a property tax cap plan.
Say "NO" to:
As the Governor and legislators return to Albany for this emergency session it is important that the uniformed voice of education advocates from across the state is heard LOUD and CLEAR!
Cutting education funding is not the answer to the state's economic crisis. The more times the Governor hears from us the better, be sure to pass this message along. We must speak up now!

Butterflies lead you to the sunny side of life. And everyone deserves a little sunshine. The butterfly's attractiveness derives not only from colors and symmetry; deeper motives contribute to it. -Maya Angelou -Kahlil Gibran
Woman was created from the first man's rib, God chose the rib because it's the bone that protects man's life. Your characteristics are as the rib, strong yet delicate and fragile. You provide protection for the most delicate organ in man, his heart. His heart is the center of his being; his lungs hold the breath of life. The rib cage will allow itself to be broken before it will allow damage to the heart, so support the man as the rib cage supports the body. You were not taken from his feet, to be under him, nor were you taken from his head, to be above him. You were taken from his side, to stand beside him; his compliment...under his arm to be protected and next to his heart to be loved. Man represents my image, woman my emotions. Together, you represent the totality of God. So man, treat woman well. Love her, respect her, for she is fragile. In hurting her, you hurt me. What you do to her, you do to me. In crushing her, you only damage your own heart, the heart of your Father, and the heart of her Father. Woman, support man. In humility, show him the power of emotion I have given you. In gentle quietness, show your strength. In love, show him that you are the rib that protects his inner self.
"SISTERHOOD" When I was younger, I used to believe in the concept of one best friend. When I became a woman, then I found out that if you allow your heart to open up, God would show you the best in many friends.
One friend is needed when you're going through things with your man.
Another friend is needed when you're going through things with your mom.
Another when you want to shop, share, heal, hurt, joke, or just be.
One friend will say let's pray together, another let's cry together, another let's fight together, another let's walk away together.
One friend will meet your spiritual need, another your shoe fetish, another your love for movies, another will be with you in your season of confusion, another will be your clarifier, another the wind beneath your wings.
But whatever their assignment in your life, on whatever the occasion, on whatever the day, or wherever you need them to meet you with their gym shoes on and hair pulled back, or to hold you back from making a complete fool of yourself ... those are your best friends.
It may all be wrapped up in one woman, but for many it's wrapped up in several... one from 7th grade, one from high school, several from the college years, a couple from old jobs, several from church, on some days your mother, on some days your neighbor, on others your sisters, and on some days your daughters.
So whether they've been there 20 minutes or 20 years,
Be grateful for the women that God has placed in your life to make a difference.
"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. "Always remember to have faith and manage your life accordingly to higher principals and wiser choices."

"A true companion is loving all the time, and is a brother or sister that is born for when there is distress."-Prov. 17:17 For our affection to do the most good, we need to express it. When our affection is real, our face likely shows it, and it may move the heart of others to respond. A card, a letter, and "a word spoken at the right time"-all of these can express deep affection. Once we have gained the friendship of others, we must maintain it by continuing to show unselfish affection. Especially in times of need, we will want to be there for our friends.
"Casual friends have their place in life... but we all need TLC that only precious friends can provide."
This is one of the toughest budget fights ever! But we've got to stay on top of things. PLEASE send your letters NOW. http://salsa.democracyinaction .org/o/425/t/24/p/dia/action/p ublic/?action_KEY=734 The facts? Governor Paterson proposed a $2.5 billion dollar cut from our children's schools. President Obama delivered federal stimulus funding for education that begins to fill the huge hole Governor Paterson has created but it isn't enough. The state must step up and do its part by adding state education dollars. Will the state deliver on the promise made to our children or will they fail to add in any state education dollars to the budget and instead rely only on the stimulus aid? We need the Senate Democrats to provide the leadership needed to make sure that our children get a real down payment on the CFE dollars that are due to our schools this year. salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/ 425/t/24/p/dia/action/public/ The FIGHT is NOT over! We've got to hang in there for our children. United we CAN make the difference! |
