Junior Rivera was born Octavio Rivera Jr, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His father "Dicky" a local singer and **cortista for over 30 years with the bands La Controversia and Salsa Progresiva, was one of his musical mentors. It was with this band that he began singing chorus in the 1980's. He developed his Soneo skills under the master guidance of Cecil Negron of the orchestra Sabor and Victor "Vitin" Narvaez(May he rest in peace). Junior began to study the "Old School Soneros" styling of Cheo Feliciano, Ismael Rivera, Tito Allen,Hector Lavoe and Pete El Conde Rodriguez.
Junior Rivera credits Orquesta Kalidad as the foundation from which he developed as a **sonero and percussionist. With his time in Orquestra Kalidad, he sang with some of the greats in the area; Ramon Gely, Roberto (Bobby) Pagan and Ramon Velez. At one point in his career he joined forces with Sergio (Veneno) Poventud, director of Orquesta Veneno, a Merengue band that dominated the Latin music scene in Milwaukee for several years. However, Junior's love for salsa music began to take over. And with Sergio's blessing he left Veneno, and joined Jose Claudio and Salsa Power to fill his void for Salsa! He later joined Alberto Rivera in Chicago to sing with Orquesta Isla, While with this group, he backed up professional singers from New York, Florida and Puerto Rico. Amongst them were Cano Estremera, Cheo Feliciano, Frankie Negron, Michael Stuart, Wichy Camacho, Jerry Galante, Tito Allen, Eddie Santiago,Alex D' Castro and Ismael Miranda just to name a few. For Junior Rivera, The ultimate highlight of his singing career was at Milwaukee's Summerfest, 2003, when the great Tito Nieves invited him onstage to sing together!
Junior has sung with several talented Salsa Orquestas including Charambo from Chicago, and local Milwaukee band Salsa Power lead by Jose Claudio, with Madisalsa lead by Claude Calliet in Madison Wi and with Joey Burgos and Clave Y Afinque, til now with whom he is currently with D'Calleson, Rumbon D'Esquina, Madisalsa and Rica Obsesion from Chicago,Ill.
He has also toured with Luis Damon from New York and with Bahia, from Milwaukee. He came full circle as a Salsa sonero when he formed Orquesta Rivera with Alberto Rivera and together they performed at several venues in Chicago and Milwaukee in the early 2000's. He then was included in Milwaukee's own Old School Salsa Orquesta, featuring Joey Burgos,by and far Milwaukee's best salsa singer.
A few words of thanks from Junior Rivera: "I would like to thank first of all Ba'ali (my Lord) and Savior Y'shua Mashiyach (Jesus Christ), for blessing me with this wonderful talent." "My father, Dicky Rivera, Vitin Narvaez and especially Cecil Negron, whom believed in my talent when nobody else would."And also Tony Ayala,Miguel Colon and Negro Santaella(D'Calleson) and to my new brother in Mashiyach(Christ) Dennis Calito. "I also want to thank Milwaukee's great singers Ramon Gely, Ramon Velez, Bobby Pagan, Miguel Colon and my brother, Frankie Rivera, also Joey Burgos for inspiring me as a young man to become a salsa singer, and directors and band leaders past and present Sergio Poventud, Ramon Torres, Cecil Negron, Alberto Rivera,Claude Calliet, Joey Burgos and Tony Ayala." "I know that I wasn't always nor am ever easy to deal with!"
