Hotel Owner Asks Latino Workers to Change Their Names

In an effort to resurrect a failing hotel in Taos, New Mexico, new owner Larry Whitten, a former Marine, made it his first order of business to stop his workers from speaking Spanish in his presence and to Anglicize their names.

He feared they were...

That's amazing. It's bad enough immigrants have to assimilate when they arrive to this country but make them change there name and language porque le da la gana. It's unfair and unjust.

Immigrant or not, what our names are should have nothing to do with our jobs... people can name their kids Superman and Apple but I can't opt to have a hyphenated name? I am US born and regardless of that I think anyone has right to keep their name any which way they want it and God so help the people that ever approach me with such a thing because this little Latina would not tolerate that.. these things are the driving force behind me want to go to Law school... there needs to be more in place to not permit this type of discrimination... makes me sick.

I think its completely wrong for the owner to tell the workers to change the name. I understand that business is business but I"m 100% if he asked an African-American citizen to change their name.. example: Moesha, Lamear, etc.. this would be considered racism.. why is it ok to ask Latinos to change names but not for African Americans or Irish or Iatalians? This is completely wrong, justb plain wrong

wow what is this world coming to. Racism is still as strong as it was a couple of hundred years ago. This coming from an ex-marine- shows how this country is still in need of progression. It has always been a struggle to be a minority and we just have to keep strong and battle it out with the injustice that rises upon us. I take pride on being a latina, I wouldn't have it any other way. It's because of cases like these that encourages me take criminal justice classes and help out those in my race to rise from this. In dedication of my brother Denis Calderon- a wrongly accused latino that was convicted by Philadelphia. This is our website http://www.DenisAndJulioAndFai th.com

This is the main reason that the world is the way it is today. I've experienced similar issues in my life so I can relate with the situation. I just hate the fact that things like this are still going on. However we just have to keep doing what we can to avoid it and not let it torment our lives.

@purplet09- Besides the indigenous, Blacks were one of the first groups that were forced to assimilate. Nigger, darkie, boy, sambo, uncle, mammie, auntie WERE their names. Not officially but that's what they were called. Hell, sometimes they were given different names altogether. So, we have been forced/ridiculed into changing our names. Have you never watched Roots? KK was almost beat to death for trying to hold on to his African name. Even to this day, some Blacks reconsider "ethnic" names as to spare their sons/daughters future. Why must people always diminish the efforts/struggles of other in order to bring credence to themselves? Maybe when more latinos take up the cross for Laquisha and Natorsha, we as a whole can decrease the number of these type of incidents.
