When we let Spirit Lead Us

When we let spirit
lead us
it is impossible
to know
we are being led.
All we know
all we can believe
all we can hope
is that
We are going
That wherever
takes us
is where

Alice Walker

"No price is too high to pay for the privilage of owning yourself" Rudyard Kipling

Loves music. Loves dance. Loves the moon. Loves the Spirit. Loves Love and food and roundness. Loves struggle. Loves the folk. Loves Herself. Regardless" Alice Walker

I am Cuban, but am definately conscious and also proud of my African heritage. I strongly identify with any people and/or culture of the African diaspora. African people have been everywhere on this planet, against their will and willingly as well. I am hesitant about identifying as Hispanic (just as I am hesitant to label myself anything) because the term was created here to place all Spanish-speaking people in a distinct racial category. Latinos are too racially and culturally diverse to be conveniently placed into one group. Our only similarity is the colonization, exploitation, and genocide we endured under Spanish rule, which is also the legacy we share with African people all over the world, from the West indies to Europe. Because my ancestors came to Cuba in a slave ship and because my culure and religion have a strong African base, I prefer to identify as Afro-Cuban, although I am aware that this is also conflictive, since 1) I have never set my eyes on the motherland and 2) I have also a considerable amount of the colonizers` blood running through my veins. Identifying as or claiming anything is nonetheless a complex affair, and I`d much rather just id as human. All one has to do is read one's history to understand where one comes from. be real to yourself.

I believe the best way to talk about one's self is to talk about one's aspirations. Life is a journey. Evolution and growth is a constant. Who I am today is a human being evolving and working to become she who I want to be. The person I aspire to be is free, mentally, economically, and spiritually. Social institutions such as church and family can sometimes do more harm than good, keeping us captive to norms that are self destructive. Free your mind from all the shackles that bind you. Your life is yours to live and all the answers you will ever need reside within yourself. I aspire to be a loving person, nourishing the spiritual growth of people around me. We do not live in this planet alone. although in today's technological society we think we are independent of each other, you can never forget that we are humans, living beings that are an integral part of a bigger phenomenon, a process, a cycle of life, growth, and renewal. you are not alone, and you are not independent of that natural world that brought you into being. what is life if you cannot have a meaningful impact on the life of someone else? I aspire to be a continously growing person. the mind is a powerful tool. use it. nobody is perfect, and as my very good friend says "perfect people don't grow". there is always something to be learned from someone else. there are so many influences that feed into our circumstances and experiences. everyone has a different experience and a different thing to teach others. keep your mind open to new people, experiences and information, and you will continue to grow and evolve as a human being, having a much more profound understanding of life and people. the truth can set you free.
